Darkness Silence Mirror Flame is the debut album from San Francisco's Nite, a band that combines '80s trad metal with raspy black vocals to answer the question, "what would it sound like if Abbath sang for Iron Maiden?" Yeah, I know, it's unlikely anyone has ever asked that question, but the result isn't all that bad. You have melodic twin guitars and a pulsing rhythm section with unintelligible but not overly harsh singing throughout the album, making it a perfect entry into extreme music for trad fans looking to expand their horizons. I've listened to the album several times and none of the songs seems willing to stick in my head, but they are all solid, built as they are around beefy, if a tad generic, riffs. The challenge of singing along will be a hindrance to some but others will be satisfied with breaking out an air guitar or air drums and jamming along. If you crave something different yet at the same time familiar, Darkness Silence Mirror Flame might scratch that itch. |
