Upon first hearing this album I could have sworn this band was from New York or Florida, but it turns out it's from Kansas. The aptly named Unmerciful play brutal death metal that immediately made me think of Immolation mixed with Cannibal Corpse, served on a technical platter. The album is basically a long stream of fast, uncompromising death metal that doesn't stop to smell the roses, rather stomping them with its heaviness. I've found that no one song really sticks out, with everything just "unremarkably" flowing together, which is something I usually frown on, but here it works very well—the album is like a 39-minute barrage of pure unadulterated death metal that doesn't try to do too much and just blends influences of the two big schools of USDM. Nicely done. |
