Blood Star is a new band featuring Visigoth guitarist Jamison Palmer, along with some other West Coast musicians including Spell's Al Lester on drums and Sanctifyre's Hoah Hadnutt on bass. The vocals are provided by newcomer Madeline Smith, who fits right in with the kick ass, old school metal Palmer has come up with for the band's initial release for Shadow Kingdom Records, a single featuring two songs, "The Fear" and "Tortured Earth." Smith has a Mark Shelton vibe, kind of a dry warble that really adds to the simple, stripped down appeal of Blood Star's music. "The Fear" is the faster of the two cuts, blistering away with an "Aces High" sort of riff, giving way to Smith, who locks you in her gaze with the chorus. "Tortured Earth" is slower, not by much, and has a little more atmosphere in comparison to "The Fear's" in your face attitude. If you like rocking, straight ahead heavy metal, Blood Star have given notice that they do as well. Start making sacrifices to the metal gods and pray that this band has an album in the works. |
