With a name that screams atmospheric/epic black metal, the U.K.'s Old Forest has unleashed their fifth album, Back into the Old Forest, a re-recording of their 1999 debut, Into the Old Forest. Following paths first laid down by the likes of Bathory and later widened and expanded by Summoning, Caladan Brood and a thousand Tolkien-influenced groups, Back into the Old Forest does the same balancing act between blasting beats and unearthly rasps and introspective and atmospheric passages. There's a harshness to the music that befits its proximity to the genesis of the second wave of black metal in the '90s but the nascent epic/atmospheric elements are also clearly formed though not nearly as compelling or able to transport the listener as later bands have become adept at. Back into the Old Forest lacks the diversity that gives epic black metal a lot of its appeal but if you don't mind your second wave music with a bit more melody and scope, you'll find it a decent listen.
