Ice War have been relatively prolific in their short history—or I should say his history, as this is the work of one man. The basic style of raw, unpolished heavy metal has been present in all releases, but they've all incorporated enough influences to be all over the place. Defender, Destroyer is the latest entry and my favourite so far. It is still very old school and raw and very garage-like in style, very much like so many hopefuls were in the early '80s, and that has an indisputable charm in this house. With this album, the speed has been cranked up quite a bit and that puts the album slightly into speed metal territory and that's really what got my attention and resulted in so many repeat listens since I got the album. Throw in some punk elements that fit right in (Jo has been a member of a number of punk bands), adding a nice cachet to the whole thing. The vocal style hasn't changed much from the previous album, though here he sounds a bit more in control and doesn't fall into the trap of trying to go past his comfort zone. If elements of Motörhead, Maiden and obscure early NWOBHM bands with a punkish vibe sound like a good mix to you, you may well find something to like here.
