I've been listening to this EP off-and-on for quite a while now and it's hard to describe. It's all over the place and doesn't really fit into a specific genre. The closest thing is melodic death metal and by that, I mean "death metal with melody" and not "melodic death metal" as we usually think of it (old In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, etc.) The band's name and title for their first EP is kind of gutsy, taken from the title of Entombed's classic debut. We'll see if this band ultimately lives up to the challenge... Left Hand Path is filled with melodies, not only musically but also vocally, which is a feat in itself considering the vocals are semi-decipherable death growls, so definitely kudos for that. Ever since I first heard this EP months ago, some of these melodies have been popping in my head randomly, so they definitely leave an impression. This is death metal, but it's very mellow for the genre and I guess that's what makes it so intriguing and keeps me going back to it. The band has a progressive approach to the genre and that's usually not something that really grabs me, but these guys seem to have found the magic formula. If you don't mind a good dose of melody in your death metal and are looking for something different, this is certainly worth checking out. |
