Ruinous are a New Jersey based act that describe themselves as "Crushing and dismal Death Metal", and I certainly won't argue with that. Graves of Ceaseless Death is a little over 47 minutes of U.S. Death Metal that's aided by a bellowing production job that gives their rumbling bass work more attention than you regularly see in this style, and rightfully so. There aren't any real standout tracks on this, but every one is an assault of pummeling riffs, killer lead work, and top-notch vocal work which ranges from guttural grunts to cavernous growls. They even manage to pull off an 11-minute epic on "Through Stygian Catacombs", which starts off fairly slowly and gradually builds tempo over time until it transforms into a savage whirlwind of a track. Overall, these guys aren't pushing boundaries, but they're more than content to smash your skull straight into them. Recommended. |
