Reject the System is the eighth album from Germany's Palace and the second one I've reviewed after 2014's The 7th Steel, a record I found decent but generic. Reject the System is a step up across the board from its predecessor. It blasts out of the speakers from the first notes of "Force of Steel" with gritty, in-your-face metal and doesn't let up one bit. There are some quicker numbers but nothing you'd really say was approaching the double kicks of power metal. It's got more ass-kicking traditional metal songwriting which seems to suit Palace better than what they wrote for The 7th Steel. The vocals are a gritty shout, an improvement from the last album, and the rest of the band aren't afraid to step up to the microphones and shout in response. This, combined with the crunchy riffing and above-average lead work, gives the album a Tornillo-era Accept sound. No, it isn't original and no, there's nothing on here the likes of "Beat the Bastards" or "Bucket Full of Hate" from Accept's Blood of the Nations but it remains an excellent and satisfyingly consistent record that should put fists in the air and get heads banging with ease. |
