This album caught me totally off guard as it's pretty rare that I like an album just a few seconds into the first song. Runemaster's debut follows three EPs released since 2015 and it's a really cool slab of epic heavy metal that's relatively "easy listening"—as far as metal goes anyway. Wanderer is one of those albums where the vocals are front and centre and everything else lines up behind and goes along for the ride, and I mean that in a good way. The clear, deep vocals are delivered with a "decisive" tone that packs a lot of punch and the style is just powerful, catchy and quite addictive. I've listened to this several times when walking around the city and I had to restrain myself from raising my fist in the air and looking like a maniac, and that's just the work of the vocals. Musically things fall well in line with said vocals and gives them added power. It's heavy stuff delivered convincingly and not particularly flashy, but a lot of this just gets stuck in your head upon first listen. I had no idea what to expect when I got this, and Runemaster turned out to be a really cool discovery and a band I'll be keeping an eye on in the future. |
