I've heard some of Kat's later output in the past few years and every time I thought it was just a different band than the one that released the excellent 666 back in 1986. Well, it turns out that the Polish veterans simply changed styles, so this really is the same band. Unfortunately, this doesn't kick as much ass, though The Last Convoy does have its moments. The band has now morphed into a heavy metal band, so gone is the evil blackened speed/thrash of 666 and in comes a more upbeat, easy-going brand of metal. What they did keep is the old-school vibe, as the songs here do sound like they were written with '80s traditional metal in mind, though Kat have mixed in a bit more modern influences, such as on "Mind Cannibals". But, while the songs are overall pretty decent, they don't really distinguish themselves from the pack, and the acoustic "Dark Home—The Habitat of Gods" is a song I wish I had never heard. It's not bad per se, but it's kind of boring and feels totally out of place in the middle of the album. Out of nine tracks, three are covers ("Highway Star", "Blackout" and "You Shook Me All Night Long") and the "hidden" ninth track is just a continuation of "You Shook Me All Night Long", so that's a little unusual. The good news is that the covers are pretty cool—close enough to the originals while having some of Kat's signature sound mixed in. The band also brought in some special guests, including Tim "Ripper" Owens on "Flying Fire 2020". Bottom line, this is decent heavy metal; it's really not essential, but you could also do worse. There are enough good songs here to warrant at least a couple of listens.
