Early Moods chose their name with care as this L.A.-based band plays old-school doom on their debut EP, Spellbound. This isn't modern stoner/sludge, this is reverbed guitars cranking out leaden riffs, bass so thick you can hear the strings vibrate and clear, keening vocals with just a touch of creepiness. The songwriting in solid but adheres to the formulas already laid down so there's nothing transformative, but this is a relatively young band and they've made no mistakes out of the gate. Even their image is old school with hairstyles fresh from the '70s. If you like doom that goes back to the roots and has more of a haunting vibe, like Trouble or Sabbath, Early Moods is a band you need to start following. |
