This band has been around for over 40 years, which surprised me because I'd never heard of them before their 2020 release, The Last Convoy, showed up in my review queue. Apparently, they were quite the speed metal act in the '80s (check out the review of their 666 release here on The Metal Crypt) but with the majority of their albums released by tiny, independent labels, it is probably not such a stretch they've flown under the radar for so long. Anyway, they may have been speed metal in the past, but The Last Convoy is really just a rocking, traditional metal affair with several covers and re-recordings. The gruff vocals and chugging riffs surrounded by upbeat songwriting had me thinking of a heavier Gun Barrel or maybe a less serious Iced Earth. The covers are boilerplate versions of songs that inspired Kat back in the day and the band doesn't do anything to make the songs their own. Their own tracks are just as generic. This stuff would be fine as background music in a bar but in terms of filling me with a desire see the band play, there is nothing here remotely that inspirational. |
