This is the debut for Everlore, a good, old-fashioned Finnish Power Metal band. I am so used to Power Metal bands being symphonic, or adding harsh vocals, or doing all kinds of things to be different, that a back-to-basics band like this is a nice surprise. That said, Everlore are not great. They sound pretty much exactly like you would imagine except their singer, Joonas Kunnela, does not have the expected high-pitched wail, but instead has a kind of stuffy-headed, nasal tone that doesn't suit this music at all. If he had great melodies to work with that would matter less, but pretty much everything about this is tepid and conventional. This is competently played and had an okay recording job, but it sounds like a disc that was produced in 1999, and it would have been average even then. |
