Funeral Storm is a Greek black metal band that formed way back in 2001, but this is their first full-length albums after a few splits and a compilation released over the years. Their style is largely that of early '90s Greek black metal, bringing bands such as Varathron and Rotting Christ to mind more than a few times throughout the album, though this is not some kind of ripoff band either. There's a lot of emphasis on atmosphere and melody and not so much on speed, so I found the album kind of relaxing in a way (mind you, I sometimes sleep with the Cannibal Corpse discography playing, so my definition of "relaxing" differs from that of most people). The atmosphere is really what sets this apart and it reminded me at times of another Greek band, Nocternity, which is always a good thing in this house. If you're looking for some good black metal that's not pedal-to-the-metal, this is a good one to check out. |
