A bit of an unexpected release from Helstar here. This single contains the title track, an original ballad, and an homage to Ronnie James Dio in the form of a cover of Black Sabbath's "After All (The Dead)". The ballad is surprisingly good and catchy and got stuck in my head after the first listen. It's heavy and powerful, very reminiscent of metal ballads from the '80s but with a modern delivery. It's hard not to sing along to this one. It's also a perfect companion to the Black Sabbath cover, which I must admit I did not immediately recognize ("this sounds familiar ... where did I hear this?") largely due to the fact that I'm more of an Ozzy-era Sabbath fan. I think Helstar did the original honour as their rendition just sounds great, especially since it's a great match to the title track, the two blending together seamlessly. Black Wings of Solitude is largely slow due to the nature of its two tracks, but if you're into slow-paced, heavy ballads, then this is certainly worth checking out.
