Eighth album for the prolific one-man band Horn, who continue to impress me with powerful, melodic Pagan Metal that really reminds me of the greats of the French scene from 15-20 years ago. If you liked Himinbjorg or Belenos, then this is in the same vein. The songs are long and highly melodic, and I think the guitar sound is a touch weak this time out. Too smooth for me. That said, the compositions are big and varied, with a lot of different parts and a lot of interchanging melodies and hooks. Vocals alternate between a decent rasp and a quite good, rough-edge clean voice. All the elements are here, but I really keep hoping this guy will make a monster of an album. This is not it, but it is still really good. |
