After being amazed by Rare Field Ceiling, I decided to dive into this band's back catalog to see if they had any albums to match it. This was their debut, initially released on cassette with a limit of 100 copies, and it's unsurprisingly a much less refined version of the sound present on their later albums. The compositions are more direct, the songwriting is less inventive and engaging, the production is a lot rougher, and the lyrics are less poetic and strange. There are some really cool riffs on this, but the songs tend to meander around a few ideas without really developing them into anything special, and the bell-like tremolo melodies can be really shrill and agitating. As a first attempt, it definitely has promise for what they would become, and fans of the band should give it a listen for that alone. If you're new to the band, however, this isn't the album you want to start with.
