It's hard to believe it's already been 10 years since Heathen's excellent comeback, The Evolution of Chaos. I was hoping for something roughly along the same lines with Empire of the Blind, but it's not nearly as hard-hitting as their past output and mostly does away with the thrashy sound that they used to mix with their traditional heavy metal; you know, what made them Heathen, at least in my book. The band has chosen a more melodic and more accessible path, venturing into a much more crowded field, and that's where they kind of lost me. It's not a bad album per se and it does have its moments where it sounds more Heathen-ish that make me wish the whole album still had that vibe, but I honestly can't remember much of it once it's over. |
