After 2017's The Whitecrow, Hypnos follow up with The Blackcrow. Cute. ?? I wasn't particularly impressed with The Whitecrow, though it got a little better over time. The Blackcrow follows in the same direction, but it's not quite as trippy and experimental and, when they go for that, it's obvious that the band got better at it so the songs on the album fit together a lot more this time around. Overall, it's technical and experimental death metal that doesn't blast everything in its path, rather going for slow to mid pace with the occasional speedier songs. If you like your death metal more intricate, as opposed to a pedal-to-the-metal poundfest, then this album is likely to be of interest. Interestingly, they end the album with a rerecording of "In Blood We Trust", the title track of their 2000 debut album, which really shows how far away from the original sound Hypnos have come. I personally still prefer their older stuff, but The Blackcrow is pretty good when the mood calls for it. |
