In Purge There Is No Remission is the second album from Finland's Ordinance. They play the kind of creepy, miasmic black metal the country's scene is known for, mixing tempos with great effect on atmospheric tension. The vocals are a crusty, almost death-like croak, when they aren't high-pitched, tortured wails reminiscent of Tom Araya in early Slayer ("Credo Sceleratum"). The songwriting is better than average, with many interesting twists and turns and not just a blur of guitars and drums or a leaden drone. Ordinance have found a way to stand out from the crowd by creating a more immersive listening experience on In Purge There Is No Remission, a refreshing change from the myriad of generic black metal out there. |
