Reverend are largely known because this was David Wayne's band after he left Metal Church at the end of the '80s. A Gathering of Demons, along with his album titled Metal Church (under the Wayne moniker), were his last releases in 2001. David passed away in 2005. This reissue contains a remix of the original mini-CD, the original mix, as well as some live recordings. There's an expanded booklet that I have not seen.
Unsurprisingly, Reverend sound a lot like Metal Church, though not as good (this could be debated if we compare with some of Metal Church's last few albums, however...) So, if you like Metal Church, especially their first 10 years or so, then it's likely that you'll find something to like in Reverend's brand of crunchy heavy metal. The one song that stands out is "Legion". It sounds almost exactly like "Fake Healer" by Metal Church (one of my favourites), but with different lyrics. Long story short, Wayne co-authored it while in Metal Church and used it in Reverend. Based on his comment at the beginning of the live version, it looks like this is what the song was originally supposed to be. Stuck in between the 2019 remix and the original mix from 2001 is a nice cover of UFO's "Lights Out", which acts as a good separator between the two mixes. The album ends with live versions of "Legion" and "Start the Fire", both with decent but not great sound.
A Gathering of Demons is a nice deluxe reissue even though it feels repetitive with the same two sets of songs and a third version of "Legion" toward the end. But if you can't get enough David Wayne, this is a pretty cool item to get.
