I reviewed Italian guitarist Leo Viridi's album LV1 in the summer of 2019 and despite it being an album by a guitarist, which usually means everything about it is designed to show off the guitarist's skills and little else, it was an enjoyable album of fully formed songs. Viridi is back with a new EP titled The World Keeps Turning and while it is also songs and not noodling, it is several steps below LV1. First off, I know Viridi is an independent musician so I am trying to be cognizant of the limitations that implies, but the sound on this EP is muddy and muffled, like everything in the studio had a wet blanket on it. The songs don't help either, full as they are with generic riffs and bland vocal lines. I can understand musicians wanting to keep putting out music to build their base, but none of the listless songs on The World Keeps Turning that is likely to bring Viridi any new fans. If you want to hear what he's capable of, check out LV1 and give this EP a pass. |
