Ithaca, Black Fate's fourth album, is the first I've heard from this Greek band and based on their name I was expecting some black/thrash, but they actually play highly polished progressive power metal. What hit me immediately is how much singer Vasilis Georgiou sounds like Roy Khan and when you combine that with the excellent guitar work and melodic but not overpowering keyboards, I kept thinking of Kamelot while Ithaca was on. Sure, none of the songs approach the sublime perfection of those from The Black Halo but, to be fair, that's a high bar for any band to hit. Black Fate do write quality songs with a good feel for atmosphere and excellent balance between the "power" and "progressive" aspects of their sound. I can't pick any standout tracks but assure you there are no weak ones on Ithaca, making it a consistent and enjoyable album. Since we are never likely to hear Khan fronting Kamelot again, I'll take Black Fate's Ithaca as the next best thing. |
