Lord save us from Post Black Metal. Bands as diverse as Agalloch and Woods of Ypres prove you can make that kind of thing diverse and interesting, but this is yet another act who really just wants to be Post Rock but decided to slap on some harsher tremolo sections and really strained harsh vocals to make some claim towards being Metal. This actually starts out pretty well with some compelling melodies on the opening tracks, but then we get to the flat female vocals that sound entirely uninterested with the proceedings, and they set the tone for the rest of the album pretty well. You get flashes of good melodies here and there, but then it's back to the mind-numbing strumming and awful dancy sections, none of which are put together to make a coherent or interesting song. There's nothing on here I'd call aggressively terrible, but as a Metal album I don't see much value in it. |
