Legionem are an Italian Doom Metal act formed in 2016, but this album is my first direct exposure to the band. Sator Omnia Noctem is all about that '70s Doom sound, back before we had a proper name for the genre, complete with that warm, organic sound that helps define it and a darky, moody atmosphere to punctuate it. They stand out from the recent pack of retro Doom acts by incorporating some progressive elements to their sound, not too far off from what Sabbath started doing on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and even some keyboards to add more depth to the compositions. Some highlights include the ominous "Christe Eleison", the devilish, Candlemass-esque "I Am Magister", and the catchy, melodic "AEAJATMOAAMVMSGSTGJEZ" (no, I didn't just slap my keyboard, that's actually the title), all led by the wicked vocal work of Magister Notte VIII. I'd say more, but for a sound this old school, there's not any one gimmick to lean on. You just need to understand what makes the retro sound truly timeless, and Legionem have that down in spades. Whether you're a young fan looking to understand the old-school sound or an old hippie nostalgic for the good ol' days, this is an essential release. |
