Seven is, you guessed it, the seventh full-length from Finland's Mors Principium Est and continues in the same vein of melodic death metal as their previous efforts. I loved their last album (2017's Embers of a Dying World) but this one settles back into the amazing sound and performances but less diverse songwriting groove of their earlier releases. That's not meant to be taken negatively, I just think that, on Embers, the band punched way above their weight and are now back in more familiar territory. Everything on Seven is sharp and clean and the vocals and riffs still retain a lot of punch so this is music that can appeal to power metal fans looking for some extra aggression or death metal fans looking for more melody. None of the songs jumped out at me the way they did on the last album but there are no songs that require skipping, making the whole album a solid listening experience. A solid and safe release from Mors Principium Est. |
