Hailing from South America's hotbed for Extreme Metal, Colombian 5-piece Rotten Spirit play in that brand of blasting Death Metal that you'd expect to hear from that corner of the world. The lyrics are all in Spanish, so I couldn't tell you what they're growling about (though I doubt vocalist Enrique Rondon would be any more understandable if he were singing in English), but I can tell you that El retorno del carroñero spends its entire runtime trying to be as heavy and brutal as possible. Trouble is, most of the album relies on the speed and ferocity too much and rarely gives the songs anything else to do, resulting in most of them being rather one-note. However, there are points where they slow down and present a surprisingly moody sense of melody, and I really think the band should focus more on that in the future, as it's significantly more engaging than the rest of it. Still, this is a perfectly decent debut from a young band that shows just enough promise to make them worth watching out for. |
