Master of Masters is the seventh album from long-running Belgian power metal band Iron Mask and sees them really dialed in on the sound they've been going after for nearly two decades. Let's get it out of the way right now and say there is nothing on this album any power metal fan worth his or her salt hasn't heard innumerable times in the past, but this is definitely a case of when it is played well, it doesn't matter if it is derivative. Iron Mask lean on predecessors throughout the album but in a respectful, not plagiaristic way. Guitarist Dushan Petrossi lights up his fretboard with his best neoclassical leads on tracks like "Dance with the Beast," which sounds like Trilogy-era Yngwie. The band speeds along with double-kick drums that drive songs such as "Nothing Lasts Forever" at early Rhapsody speed and they even tap into Serenity's emotive vocal lines ("One Against All"). The production is pure power metal with a crystal-clear sound, surgical precision, and space for everything to be heard. The songwriting leaves you plenty of hooks bouncing in your ears long after the album ends courtesy of "Never Kiss the Ring", "A Mother Loved Blue" and "Master of Masters." So, there you have it, Master of Masters is a power metal fan's power metal album. If that isn't your genre, this isn't your album. If it is, this is as enjoyable a purchase as you'll find. |
