Leadbreaker are yet another Swedish band tapping the metal sounds of the early '80s on their self-titled debut but, unlike some of their peers, they have missed the mark. They seem to have a handle on how this kind of metal should sound, but their songwriting is generic with a lot of repetition in the choruses and riffs. The singer has a punk quality to his voice, like a less charismatic Bon Scott, and the entire production is flat and colorless, rendering the guitar tone muted and the vocals too far forward in the mix. A lot of the twin guitar work is clearly inspired by Iron Maiden, but the playing has little of that same spark. A combination of thundering AC/DC riffs and acrobatic Maiden leads sounds like it could be awesome, but Leadbreaker only show us how not to do it. |
