Evil Strikes Again is the fifth full-length from this Colombian band, coming five years since their last effort, 2015's Trap the Witch. I'd say the band did a fair amount of practicing and honing their songwriting skills in that time as Evil Strikes Again is a better effort all around. They still play early '80s black/thrash with Venom being the main influence (check out "Death to False Metal" to see what I mean) and there is still a traditional/NWOBHM feel to the riffing versus a straight thrash approach. The squealing guitar solos are Slayer-esque and there's even a bit of the speedy, more technical riffing of bands like Exciter or Razor that you can pick up in "Evil Strikes Again" or "Born to Kill." As with the majority of black/thrash bubbling up from hell these days, there's nothing on Evil Strikes Again that you haven't already heard, but the playing and songwriting are both improvements over Witchtrap's previous releases making the album quite enjoyable. If black/thrash or even just solid '80s metal is your thing, dig in. |
