It's never a good sign when you get 40 minutes into a nearly 80-minute release and give a beleaguered sigh. Spanish act Ensom work in a style of Symphonic Black Metal that has a tendency to forget the Metal part of the equation, with lackluster riffs that often get buried in the mix in lieu of the grand choirs and orchestral keys. This wouldn't be so bad if they at least had some cool melodies, and I guess when the guitars get the spotlight, they can be pretty decent, but most of this is just severely lacking identity as it tries to be as grand and important as possible while only pointing out how small and shallow the compositions really are. It's telling that the 4-minute blasts are somehow indistinguishable from the 10+ minute exercises in indulgence, none of which are doing anything new or doing it well enough to stand out or even engage outside of some surface pomp and circumstance. Tedious. |
