Johnsson & Speckmann is the result of two of Death Metal's perpetual motion machines uniting in 2013 to make the kind of Swedish Death Metal they must spend every waking moment creating, what with both Paul Speckmann and Rogga Johnson being involved in a combined 30+ projects along with various guest sessions in other bands (seriously, do they even sleep?). Should you be one of the negative five people who don't know who either of these people are, all you need to know is that they've been making good old-fashioned Swedish Death Metal for decades now, so it's no surprise that their fifth album, The Germs of Circumstance, is basically just more of that. Speaking of surprises, there aren't really any to be found here, nor does there need to be. This kind of thing isn't about reinventing the wheel so much as smashing your pitiful skull with it repeatedly, and with two seasoned veterans behind said wheel, you can rest assured they do just that for the duration of the album. Paul proves that all these years later, he's still got it with his barbaric and disturbed half-grunted delivery while Rogga shows he can still write merciless Death Metal like it's nobody's business, and with powers combined they give a perfectly solid album that you've probably heard before, but it's good enough that you won't mind as you smash your head through a concrete wall while listening to it. |
