Ha, this is great! Evoke are a Norwegian act that take the dirty sound of the first wave of German Thrash (Kreator, Destruction, Sodom, etc.) and mix in the unrestrained violence of Possessed and Whiplash with some of the melodic intensity of Slayer's Show No Mercy to make a blistering Black/Thrash assault that's not too far removed from what bands like Nekromantheon do these days. Generally speaking, this sounds like it could have been released with a number of Speed/Thrash acts back in the '80s and garnered a cult status because of it, and that's no faint praise coming from me. There are some elements here that stand out as fairly novel, such as the freaking cellos at the beginning of "Satanic Rebirth", but odds are you've heard this kind of thing done before. Then again, for an old-school fart like myself, hearing a band that pays tribute to the great acts of yore and doing it well makes me feel at home, even if it's one filled with bloodshed and violence. Get this and maybe they'll make you feel that way too. |
