Nothing like stumbling across a recent gem in the underground. Molde Volhal are yet another one-man Black Metal act with a recently released debut, and they aren't here to do anything groundbreaking or novel. No, what they're here to do is play Epic Black Metal with blistering tremolo riffs, croaks low enough in the mix to sound like they're coming from some far-off blizzard, slower melodic sections led by synth work reminiscent of old Summoning, and a raw production that still allows enough room to make the music sound massive. Sure, you could say it's a bit cheesy and unoriginal, but then I'd call you a fucking nerd for acting like that's a bad thing to be. If you got big, freezing riffs and bitcrushed horns that sound like a pumped-up soundtrack to Baldur's Gate or something and you do it with conviction, odds are I'll be ripping off my shirt and pounding my chest while I hoot like a howler monkey, and Into the Cave of Ordeals... is good enough to get me to do just that. A band to watch. |
