The Rite, another one of an increasing number of multinational bands, do something a little different on Liturgy of the Black. They play a very heavy and doomy brand of black metal that takes some of the first wave stuff, sprinkles it with a pinch of the more "rocking" moments of early Darkthrone, and wraps the whole thing with a more straight-up traditional heavy metal style. That makes for some really cool bits and I couldn't help but smile hearing the tiniest winks to their influences while listening to the album. While it's kind of rocking at times, overall the album is relatively slow paced and quite heavy and dark, so despite the strong traditional heavy metal influences, the overall vibe and atmosphere are definitely more on the darker and more extreme side of metal. Looking forward to more from these guys. |
