Dancing in Hell is the third album from Eleine, a band that plays a brand of metal with symphonic, gothic, and modern elements. As you might expect of a symphonic/gothic band, the performances are technically proficient, and the songs expertly executed. The vocals are in the front of the mix, and the singer is clearly the focus and rightfully so, she has a very good voice. What is missing from the songs is any real depth of emotion. The melodies and vocal lines are written to sound melancholic, angry, lamenting of loss, etc. but those emotions don't come across with as much conviction as this type of music needs to be truly successful. It's kind of a "paint-by-numbers" effort that tends to sound artificial or even forced in a few spots. It's well played and the sound is great, but it just never connected the way I wanted it to, except here and there (for instance, the opening riff on "All Shall Burn"). I don't hate Dancing in Hell by any means but there are other symphonic/gothic albums I'd reach for first if given the choice. |
