Spanish act Æolian impressed the hell out of me with their debut Silent Witness, and I'm happy to say that their latest album, The Negationist, has further cemented my belief that these lads are onto something special. This is very much a continuation of the last album, with a striking sense of melody that does a great job balancing out their otherwise vicious, hard-boiled Death Metal style to create an epic and novel sound that stands out as superior in the recent wave of Melodic Death Metal. There's a lot of diversity among the songs, helped in part by the incorporation of unusual instruments like tubas, French Horns, and even tam-tams, most notably on the song "Ghost Anthems". Other highlights include the epic, Moonsorrow-esque "Golden Gate" and the blazing "Blackout", whose traditional riffing reminds me of Judas Priest of all bands. I could go on all day about how this band bravely takes their Melodeath in new and exciting directions to create one of the best albums in the style I've heard in years, but I think it's better to let The Negationist speak for itself. Æolianl will be hailed as the next first-class act in Melodic Death Metal if there's any justice in the world, mark my words.
