These guys play an interesting blend of black (post-ish at times) and doom metal that makes this hour-long album quite an interesting aural journey. The overall vibe is borderline depressing in an end-of-the-world kind of way, and the slower doomy parts really bring that feeling home. Some other passages could fit on the soundtrack of a horror movie centred around the occult. The faster black metal parts can be kind of rocking at times, helping get off the depressing mood for a bit and rocking your heart a little. At times the higher-pitched, raucous vocals reminded me of Lemmy without sounding quite like him, but enough to get the urge to put on some Motörhead soon. Under Sullen Skies is a good listen that strikes a good balance between rocking and "relaxing"—if depressing—moments, though it's maybe just a tad too long and unfocused for its own good, but there are a lot of really good songs here that make up for the occasional lengths. |
