With a name like Dragonrider, you might be surprised to learn this Jordanian band (the first one I've run across in over 12 years of reviewing metal) doesn't play flowery, neoclassical power metal. They play a crunchier, less keyboard-driven style that blends the force and riff-heavy Germanic style with the smoother but still guitar-centric sounds of many U.S. bands. Scepter of Domination is the band's debut full-length album that follows several singles and shorter releases. They've been at this for many years and the performances are solid so, even though this is an independent release (getting a CD release thanks to Stormspell), the album sounds quite good. The lyrics are fantasy-based but there does not seem to be a single, unifying story on Scepter of Domination, just a collection of Greek gods, Viking berserkers and other warriors, wanderers and heroes; you know, cool stuff. Dragonrider are covering familiar ground and the songwriting isn't overly catchy which means the album is going to sound somewhat generic to many fans of power metal. Still, I've heard a lot worse, so don't hesitate to give it a listen if power metal in the vein of Iron Fire or Armory is your thing. |
