Germany's Wizard have been cranking out crunchy power metal for a long time, 30 years if track five from their twelfth album Metal in My Head is an indication ("30 Years of Metal"). If you've heard any of Wizard's prior albums, you'll know exactly what this new one sounds like, which has its pros and cons. Metal in My Head has all the hallmarks of a Wizard album; fast cuts ("I Bring Light in the Dark", "Metal in My Head") and mid-paced anthems ("30 Years of Metal", "Years of War") full of clear vocals singing about mythology, fantasy, vampires, and the metal lifestyle in general. The guitars are fat and heavy and the choruses the kind you can sing along with after a single listen. There are no weak songs, which can't be said of every Wizard album. However, Metal in My Head is going to sound very familiar to anyone that has heard Wizard in the past and the songwriting is much in line with previous efforts and, as a result, doesn't stand out in their catalog. It is a good Wizard album and a good power metal album, but short of being great. If you like your bands to settle on a solid formula and fine-tune it again and again, Wizard and Metal in My Head will be right up your alley.
