Hell-Born have been out of the loop for a while. Their last album was the rather poorly received Darkness way back in 2008, and then nothing but a few split appearances until now. They opened their career in a burst of feral energy with Hellblast, but then over time they became more generic and less exciting, until they just seemed to run out of steam. So, I had some interest in seeing if this was a stronger effort. This is still pretty middle-of-the-road Death/Black Metal, and it's not breaking any molds at all. Some bands can overcome that with energy and ferocity, but that only occasionally happens here. This gets back some of the energy of their old days, but not really as much as I hoped. Hell-Born sound solid, but they are neither vicious enough to get your attention nor interesting enough to hold it. This is not bad, not something you will want to turn off, but it's just kind of average. Look at that title and realize that it is about the extent of the thought that went into this, as Hell-Born have chops, but they don't seem to have anything to say. |
