Review

Chimera, like its predecessor Generator of Evil, is one of the "soft-ish" albums that Aria have in their large discography. This one, however, fails to get the blood pumping and could be qualified as "easy listening," at least as far as metal goes. Whereas their albums usually have an uplifting vibe, Chimera is more on the melancholic side of things and can be a bit of a downer on a bad day. Lots of slow-paced, very melodic stuff to be found here and that is not balanced by the rockers one has come to expect with past albums (though the opening title track does get a passing mark for that). The songs aren't bad per se and the performances are up to the quality you expect from Aria, but as a heavy metal album, the meat is lacking. Chimera is a bit of an outlier in the band's discography, but it can fit one's needs when in the mood for something mellow with a little crunch and punch here and there.
