There are more than a few bands named Revenge, some of which are very well known, but this one was a Greek Black/Thrash act that formed in 1999 and split up shortly after this album was officially released. Their sophomore effort, Massacre in Heaven, was actually recorded in 2011, but didn't see the light of day until it was released under a Greek label in 2020 with a paltry 100 hand-numbered cassettes. This was more than worthy of a CD/LP release, but Read My Feast Records are a small label with a low budget, so what can you do? This was a band that was into the angrier and more evil side of Thrash like Sepultura, Sarcófago, Sodom, Kreator, Slayer and the like, and they mixed in some Black Metal influences to create a malevolent, soul-desecrating assault of an album that was made to sound as evil, raw, and violent as it could. Deceased bassist/vocalist Manos Courtis' bestial rasps sounded a good bit like Sadistic Intent's Bay Cortez, and they fit the band's wicked and brutal Black/Thrash sound like a glove. This isn't what I'd call a refined or essential release, but songs like the foreboding "Oblivion" proved that Revenge were only interested in making artless, infernal noise and that they were damn good at it. Fans of more extreme underground Metal will find that this brutal and aggressive gem will satisfy their primal needs perfectly. |
