Mulla are a fairly orthodox Black Metal act that claims to hail from Iraq. I say claims because there's a fair amount of evidence to suggest that is not the case, from the incorrect usage of Arabic in their lyrics that appears to be directly lifted from Google Translate to conflicting information over the band's origins and lineup. There's a lot I can say on that particular matter, but it goes beyond the scope of a simple review, so I'll save all of that for another time. For now, I'll just say that Mulla's second album, Why Can't You See It, (translation on that is up in the air based on how they write their lyrics) sounds closer to second-wave Black Metal than anything like Al-Namrood or Melechesh. That's not a bad thing by itself, but the band just doesn't do anything terribly interesting with it. The guitar tone is mean enough, and some of the riffs are pretty cool, but the songs don't have much going on in them, often just riding said riffs into the ground for way longer than they have any right to. There are some vaguely Middle Eastern elements in some of the melodies and even a bit of chanting in spots, but I can't say it does much to elevate the material above mediocre. Passable, but unremarkable outside of the controversy around the group. |
