Interesting little split here from two Norwegian black metal powerhouses that have been around for 25+ years. Taake, on this third split in the past year, present two brand-new tracks of the cold and grim, raw black metal that one expects from the band. The songs are mostly slow to mid-paced, heavy and kind of bone-chilling with a very dark atmosphere. You like Taake? You'll like this. Helheim opted for a different approach with two covers, one of which is incidentally one of Taake's songs, "Orkan". I wouldn't have known if I hadn't read about it. The song is about two minutes shorter than the original, with mostly clean vocals and a more melodic approach, so it sounds quite different. I personally prefer the original, but it's certainly interesting to hear such a different take. The last song is a cover of Emperor's "Heksesabbat / Witches Sabbath" which was originally released on a tribute album way back in 2012. It's not nearly as raw and muddy as the original, opting for a more polished and razor-sharp approach that one might say comes off better than the original. Overall, an interesting split that's worth checking out for fans of the bands. |
