Bloodkill are a relatively new band from Mumbai, India and Throne of Control is their debut album. If the font used for the band's name wasn't enough of a clue, the vaguely Repka-esque artwork should have confirmed that Bloodkill is a thrash band. The vocals are a dry, harsh scream, not that far removed from Pantera, and I find they start to get on my nerves after a while as they don't vary much. I won't say they are bad, just not my cup of tea. Musically, on the other hand, Bloodkill can rip through a riff at top speed but also slow things down and add a bit of echo which gives songs like "Unite and Conquer" and, my favorite track, "Throne of Control," quite a bit of atmosphere that you don't typically get in thrash (I also like how the vocalist dials it down a bit on this song). The overall sound Bloodkill have achieved is surprisingly spacious considering thrash is typically more in your face and I love that the drums don't have the same old triggered sound so common in this genre. The vocals may not do much for me, but I find myself coming back for the guitars and atmosphere on Throne of Control because Bloodkill are actively trying to develop a distinctive sound. This is a promising debut. |
