Short releases like that are always annoying—at least when the music is good. Phantom Fire play a blackened form of heavy/thrash metal, so you get the harsh, black metal-style vocals (though not as out of this world as one would expect) mixed with some fast heavy and thrash metal hybrid that pretty much kicks ass from start to finish. This stuff is unpolished and really in your face. It's not particularly original, in fact it just isn't, but this is one of those "who cares, it fucking rocks" kind of EPs (well, two songs, under seven minutes, let's call it a single?) It has a kind of black 'n' roll vibe, and within these walls, when it's done right, it's cool. This is what Return of the Goat is. No gimmicks, no nonsense, just straightforward, basic metal that rocks the fuck out. Apparently, the band has a full-length in the oven and these two songs make me look forward to it. |
