Death Wolf is the "new" name for Devils Whorehouse, though it's been 10 years since the band changed names. I thought I had reviewed Devils Whorehouse just 5-6 years ago, but it turns out it's more like 17. Yikes. IV: Come the Dark is not nearly as punky as Devils Whorehouse was, really more of a punk-infused heavy/doom affair with a much slower pace overall, but still kicking the speed up a notch or ten when needed. It might be doomy at times, but more in an old school, kind of rocking way than a depressing one. The clean vocals are rather easy to understand despite being just a tad back in the mix, really leaving the instruments front and centre. The music is kind of raw and unpolished, but not in a way that would turn people off, it's just punkish metal that grinds through those speakers and doesn't try to sound pretty. Lots of good memorable riffs (and vocal lines) here, and I found that after just one listen some of that stuff had already stuck in my head. I don't expect much in terms of melodies from this genre, but the band has figured out a way to incorporate that beautifully without watering down the music one bit. Good stuff. |
