Fifth album for this tragically underrated band. Grendel have been chugging away since 2003, producing a slew of really fine albums, and this one is no exception. Spirit shows they have not just been listening to old Forefather and Skyforger, but have taken some influence from Obsequiae as well. I mean, listen to that riff on the title track—that is a pure Obsequiae riff. The real pleasure of Grendel, as a band, is that they just never let you down. They don't have a gimmick, they don't have one thing they do that makes them stand out, but they are just good—they play good riffs and write good songs, and you can listen to anything they have done and expect it to be good. This is one of the most consistent bands in metal, and there is no filler on any album they have their name on. If you like Pagan Black Metal with a touch of folk influence, then this is a band you can't skip. |
