Costa Rica has always had a strong underground Metal scene, and Höwler aren't any exception to that rule. No More Circus! is the third album from this band, and it's a damn fine workout in Bay Area Thrash akin to Death Angel if they had a more Maiden-esque melodic sensibility, none of which is to say that they're derivative in the slightest. They hit a perfect balance between propulsive Traditional Metal and flailing Thrash, churning out barricades of heavy riffing and phenomenal lead work courtesy of guitar duo David and Renan and adding in plenty of subtle nuances that makes this album one that engages even after several listens. They even stretch out with some more unconventional ideas in their songs, such as on "Embrace the Chaos" with its Pantera-esque vocals and experimental instrumental section and the Neoclassical styling that open the otherwise speedy thrasher "Entrance to Hell", both of which show a band that's willing to take risks and capable of pulling them off. If you're under the same rock I was and currently missing out on this talented band, go get No More Circus! and fix that. |
